Friday Ramblings

On it’s F-ing Cold Here…

It’s -38 degrees Celsius here in Toronto this morning (with the wind chill). For you American peeps, just to put things in perspective to Fahrenheit, it’s at -40 degrees where Celsius and Fahrenheit are the same temperature. It was cold yesterday too but I had no appointment and was able to stay home with Molly. This morning though I have my OB appointment and had to bundle us up to go out. It was cold enough that Molly actually kept her hat and hood up in the car!

On A Tough Week…

I had a bit of a scare on Monday. I was carrying Molly downstairs and my foot slipped and we both went tumbling down. It was so fast I don’t even know what happened. I managed to grab Molly’s leg before she hit the floor too hard but she still ended up with a black eye. I landed on my bum and now have the biggest bruise ever. If it wasn’t my bum, I’d post a picture. It scared the shit out of me. We cried, the two of us and I hysterically called A to come home. Luckily my sister was at my moms so she came over to stay with me until he got there. And just to be on the safe side, we went to labour and delivery to make sure the baby was ok. Despite falling on my bum, it was quite jarring and I wanted to make sure he wasn’t too jostled. They monitored me for a few hours and his heart beat was perfect. I had no contractions and no bleeding or other fluid leaking out. My blood work was great and so they sent me home. Whew!
I swear, parenting is going to give me post traumatic stress disorder. I was so scared for Molly and the baby.

On Christmas…

We had a good Christmas vacation. It would have been great but we all ended up sick. Again. Molly had another ear infection, I ended up with a sinus infection and A had a good old fashioned cold. Still, we had a lovely and relaxing time at my sister’s family cottage (her hubby’s family) and then with A’s family. Here are a few pics:

On New Years…

I confess, I was in bed and asleep by 9:30 on New Year’s Eve. I was achy from my fall and, well, I’m pregnant, so there’s all the excuse I need! A came up and woke me a few minutes to midnight though and we rang in the New Year together. That’s really all I needed. As far as resolutions go, I’m not making any. I have to be realistic. I’m about to have another baby and will be a stay at home mom to two kids for a year come the middle of March. I’ll do what I can when I can but I’m not going to make myself any promises and end up being disappointed about not keeping them. I am looking forward to 2014 though; lots of change and excitement coming our way 🙂

I hope everyone had a lovely holiday season! Back to work for me on Tuesday. Oh and did I mention it’s my birthday tomorrow? 36. Wow.

The Zoo, Zoo, Zoo

It seems a little late in the week now to be doing a weekend wind-up and here’s my excuse: The heat has taken me down y’all! It’s 45 degrees Celsius with the humid-ex today and has been just as hot for the past few days. That makes for a lazy, tired C.

So instead, I thought I’d share some pics from our trip to the Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm on Monday (A took a vacation day!). Molly LOVED seeing all the animals, even the lambs who nibbled her fingers 🙂

Weekend Wind-Up – Canada Day Edition

If nothing else, one thing was clear about this weekend: we have a walker!

We left for A’s parents place Friday afternoon. We arrived after a somewhat uneventful drive, plus a stop for A&W (big mistake. I had indigestion the rest of the night). Once we got there, we set about having Molly perform all her ‘tricks’ (Where’s Your Belly?, Clap Along with If You’re Happy and You Know It and the ever popular, Walk To Mama/Daddy!). During intermission (aka she started ignoring us) we were chatting when all if a sudden she stood up and walked across the rug! And hasn’t stopped since.

She walked while we relaxed at A’s parents. She walked when we were at the cottage on Saturday and Sunday (we were on alert to keep her from walking off the dock). She walked at the waterfront festival in Cobourg where we met up with A’s youngest sister and her beau (who seems quite nice J…yay!). Walk walk walk!

Side note: I have a renewed hatred for litterers and smokers. Put your freakin’ garbage and nasty used cigarettes in the garbage! They just call out to children ‘pick me up!’

It melts my heart seeing her adorable little steps. The uneven pitter pat is the cutest thing ever! And I have a renewed amazement at how our species has evolved. Walking is such an amazing achievement in evolution!

It was a lovely weekend, with not-too-hot temperatures but warm enough to be outside.

And now I’m on ‘vacation’! Three weeks until I’m back to work. How did that happen so quickly? Here are some of my favourite pics from our long weekend!

Weekend Wind-Up

Father’s Day weekend was quite the success! Here are the highlights:

  • Molly slept all night Thursday!! The entire night, no waking! Other than my boobs feeling like they were going to explode, it was bliss!
  • Friday night we picked up a stand alone, cantilever umbrella at Target for half price! Such a steal. Though why summer patio furniture is on clearance and pretty much non-existent now in a lot of stores before summer has even officially started is beyond me. We will now have some shade in our west-facing backyard.
  • I was a cleaning machine on Saturday! My floors were particularly messy after a week with the kiddies.
  • I put together our new umbrella almost entirely on my own. I love it! But in the process of doing so, managed to get my first (and hopefully last) sunburn of the year. Ironic since I was putting up something to keep that from happening.
  • My kick-ass hubby fixed the dip in the front patio and put the wall back together in the front. We just have to get the plants in now. Rain on Sunday prevented that from happening.

Still a bit more to do, but the hard stuff is done! Yippee!
  • Father’s Day was great! Molly and I gave A the pictures I posted in a desktop three-way frame to put on his desk at work (I want to try and make it a yearly thing). After we woke on Sunday, I made belgian waffles using my new waffle iron! They were amazing! I whipped up some fresh whipped cream and chopped some strawberries to put on them along with maple syrup (or Aunt Jemima in my case…horrible for me I know, but I prefer it to pure maple syrup)DSC_5215 (1280x1024)
  • DSC_5224copy (1280x848)
  • We had the birthday party for my friend M2’s little girl on Sunday. She’s two! The party was at a kids play centre and Molly had a blast! She jumped right in with the other kids (all older than her) and held her own. I have no worries about her in a day care setting. She particularly loved the little red cars. I shot this video of her pushing one around and around
  • On our way home from the party she fell asleep and we drove about fifteen minutes north, roaming around for 45 minutes. It was a lovely day for a lazy drive
  • We had an impromptu BBQ at my parents Sunday night, just the four of us and Molly.
  • A and I watched Warm Bodies and Jack the Giant Slayer over the weekend. We really enjoyed both movies!

And that’s about it. Five weeks left until I’m back to work 🙁 I guess the count down is on…

Friday Ramblings

On The Baby…

Molly is gradually getting sturdier on her legs. She’s standing a lot now, even so far as to go from a squatting position to a standing position all on her own! She took one step the other day, but then grabbed onto the nearest surface (I believe it was my sisters knee) to steady herself. Her sleep has been much better this week. I’m doing a combo of nursing her and pick up/put down. I know I should be more consistent, but I do enjoy the peacefulness of nursing her to sleep. She doesn’t take long to go to sleep if I end up doing pick up/put down so at least it’s not like starting from scratch each time.

On The Blog…

Sorry for the lack of interesting content lately. I have so many posts that I have in mind to write or have already started writing but with two, sometimes three, kids around most days, my time is all used up! Someday I’ll be able to focus a little bit more attention to this space. I really do love it!

On TV…

Oh my gosh, Game of Thrones!! We managed to watch Season 3 this week and it was awesome!! I won’t say anything for those of you who haven’t watched, but WOW!!! It was intense. We continued watching Arrested Development and find ourselves rather bored. We just finished episode 3 of the latest season. I think we’ll continue, as we’ve read reviews that it’s worth it to keep watching, but goodness. I almost fell asleep last night as we watched.

On Father’s Day…

It’s A’s first Father’s Day this Sunday!! I have a few things up my sleeve for him, including a top secret gift from Molly and waffles for breakfast. Which means I need to get a waffle iron (he knows this already). I found a recipe for cheddar bacon belgian waffles that sounds AMAZING, though I may stick with the traditional sort before getting adventurous.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads in my life, including my own wonderful father and my super fantastic father-in-law!

Weekend Wind-Up -Victoria Day Edition

_DSC4785 copy (1280x848)
I had to toss this in. You should have seen the floor!

Our long weekend was….ok. What could have been a great weekend was downgraded when I ended up with a headache all day Sunday that lasted into Monday, followed by a teething and therefore grumpydonotputmedown baby. One of her top lateral incisors has popped through, which is unusual as I understand the central incisors usually come through first. Apparently Molly needs to be different!

We did get started on landscaping the front, or rather I should say A got started. This is the front area before (taken in 2011):

Everything from the edge of the closest patio stone down to the sidewalk and over to the driveway has been removed and leveled (I meant to get pics today but didn’t get a chance and then it rained).  We dug up the lillies and will divide and relocate them(the tufts of green) but the bushes are gone. They’re too hard to control. I helped as much as I could, popping Molly in the stroller to watch while we worked.

_DSC4735copy (1024x1280)
Watching Mommy and Daddy work…happy baby, before the teething hit!

We (he) got as far as clearing out the section of the garden and lawn we wanted removed, digging down a bit and levelling off where the new walkway will go. Next up is to tamper down the gravel and cut into the driveway so that the stones can be placed flush against it. Currently the driveway slopes down a bit at the sides, since there was previously grass there.

I did a little bit of gardening myself, planting a Butterfly Bush in the back yard. This is a very special bush to me, as the name of the variety is ‘Miss Molly’. Isn’t that an amazing find?

_DSC4747 copy (1280x848)

And really that’s it! We took Molly for a walk down by the lake but her grumpiness shine through after a short time so we cut our outing short. Not to mention it was crazy busy down there, something I hadn’t anticipated!

_DSC4795 copy (1024x1280)
Down by the lake…a little bit grumpy 🙁

It’s Tuesday now. Molly’s still in the throws of teething, with a mild fever and the grumpydonotputmedown attitude. Poor monkey 🙁 I’m back to nursing her to sleep for the time being. . I just can’t let her get upset when she’s not feeling well.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Friday Ramblings

Oh my gosh. What a day! CK was fussy with what we now know are ear issues, CJ was whiney for whatever reason, and Molly was completely off her nap schedule because of some ill timed #2’s, which meant my one on one time with CJ was limited. Thankfully A was off work at lunchtime so he could take care of getting Molly to sleep.

All this is a way of saying sorry this is late!

On the Baby…

Molly is full on waving hello and goodbye and it’s so cute! She wakes up doing it, which explains a lot of her sleep issues. Lots going on in her little head!
Speaking of sleep, we’re not doing too badly with changing her sleep habits. I caved last night and again tonight and nursed her to sleep, for the sake of my aching and tired body (CK threw a remote on my toe, I’ve wrenched my shoulder and I’ve had some weird PMS cramping). But I’ll get back on the wagon tomorrow.

On the Sweetness of Preschoolers…

Aunt Chrissie? I’m going to love you all day

Takes the sting out of the whine she had going on today 🙂

On Landscaping…

We’re starting the first of our outdoor improvement projects this weekend, with the widening of the front walkway. I’m kicking myself that I forgot to take a before picture but I may have one somewhere from last year. It means taking out a good chunk of the front garden but it’ll give us a ton more room to manoeuvre babies, baby gear and other miscellaneous items into the house.

And that’s about all I can come up with for now! OH we’ve booked our vacation for the fall…

On Our Vacation…

We’ve chosen an island getaway this year, though it’s a bit further north than you might guess…we’re heading to Newfoundland in September for my cousin’s wedding! We’re making a week of it and will be there at the same time as my parents. I’m so excited! It’ll be Molly’s first plane ride. I hope we fare well!

That’s really it. I’m of to bed now. Hope you a have a great weekend! It’s a long weekend here and I think it might be or in the U.S. as well. Enjoy and be safe!

Weekend Wind-Up

Tired were we on Friday night, and facing the unknown reaction to the change in Molly’s sleep habits, I set aside my planned baked salmon for take out pizza 🙂
It turns out it wasn’t as difficult as we thought it would be to introduce a new routine to get Molly to sleep, but I’ll post more on that in the next few days!

Saturday morning flew by with some chores around the house and at 12:30 I got myself ready and headed out to pick up my mom (Molly stayed home with A). We were off to a baby shower for one of our old neighbours from well over 15 years ago. She wasn’t even in high school when we met her! So bizarre that she’s having a baby. We had a lovely time there and enjoyed a yummy lunch (I LOVE shower food) and the most amazing cookies and cream cupcake (Oreo based, my fave!) I’ve ever had! Not too sweet, the cake was dense and moist, the icing smooth and buttery. Sadly the bakery they came from is on the other side of Toronto 🙁

We got home around 3:30 and because Molly had a late morning nap, she was ready for an afternoon snooze when I got there. She woke shortly before six, our schedule completely thrown off for the day. Ah well! We had BBQ burgers and then the three of us went for a nice walk.

Once Molly was asleep (9pm…argh!), A and I cuddled up to watch a movie. He’s wanted to watch Chronicle for a while now, so that’s what we picked. It wasn’t too bad. I went to bed late but when Molly woke up at 5am and didn’t show signs of going back to sleep, A gave me my first Mother’s Day present by getting up with her.

We put her back down at 7:30 and enjoyed another little bit of sleep before getting ready to go to my parents for Sunday brunch. Before we left I was presented with the rest of my gifts: cards from Molly and A, chocolates, a gift card for Joe Fresh clothes (a fave of mine) and hanging flower baskets!

To tell the truth, I discovered the hanging baskets the night before. In a rare move, I went out the front door to check in with A who was cleaning his car and decided to head around back via the side of the house, which is where he was keeping them. I never go that way, usually out the back door. Oops. Such a great idea though. They’ll last awhile as opposed to cut flowers.DSC_4509copy (1024x1280)

Brunch at my parents was amazing!! My mom rocks the kitchen like no one else! She made a yummy egg strata with prosciutto, scrambled eggs, back bacon and sausages, grilled vegetables and yogurt parfaits with blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. Oh and banana chocolate chip muffins (totally healthy with while wheat flour, wheat bran and ground flax). Yum!
We saw my dad off as he left on a business trip (hence brunch not dinner) and then we took ourselves off to Costco. Molly needed new sleepers (18 month size there…what!?) and I needed ground beef. An odd pairing, I know. We also picked up a new outdoor may for the front porch, some board books for Molly, a Shepherds Pie for dinner, and yoga capris for me :-).

DSC_4497copy (848x1280)

Home we went and I tried and tried to get Molly to nap but she wasn’t having it. There’s usually one reason she won’t nap and my suspicions were confirmed a half hour later when we had a code 2 in the diaper department! By that time though it was 3:30 and I didn’t want her to nap. We tried keeping her up but around 5:30 A came upstairs with her and she was half asleep on his shoulder. Poor baby. She went to bed easily enough but woke several times in the evening. My theory? She didn’t have supper with us or her usual big nurse before bed because fell asleep so quickly, so she kept waking up hungry.

It was a fantastic weekend and I want to thank my hubby and Molly for making my first Mother’s Day so special! I’m a lucky girl 🙂
